What is an STP?

A Systematic Transfer Plan (STP) allows an investor to transfer money periodically from one mutual fund scheme to another, commonly from a Liquid or Debt Fund to an Equity Fund.

How does STP work?

Lumpsum Investment→Source Fund (Liquid/Debt)→Monthly Transfer→Equity Fund→Long-term Growth

Why use an STP?

  • Gradual deployment of lumpsum reduces concentration risk at a single point in time
  • Disciplined transfer into equity through a pre-set schedule
  • Source fund continues to earn returns on the amount yet to be transferred
  • Potential to reduce the impact of market volatility on entry timing

Note: STP does not guarantee better returns than lump-sum investing into equity. It is a risk-management and behavioural tool. Actual returns depend on market conditions and fund performance.
